@dieregterjohan, Sage gave me some advice to write Google Scripts, so I’ll try to learn some basic coding and do that. Might take a minute since I’m not a tech guy.
Liquid air seems problematic to me since it requires intense freezing equipment and energy. Another option would be to use excess energy to electrlyze water into hydrogen and compress that into tanks like you would with air. Although highly reactive, the energy density would be far superior than compressed air. Then I suppose you’d need a combustion engine to generate electricity on demand. All these solutions seem to be capital intensive for a homeowner, which would negate the low-cost approach.
You might want to look into vanadium batteries as opposed to lithium ion for storage. I don’t think they’re quite in commercial production for home systems but they’re far more promising than lithium.
According to ChatGPT:
“Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs):
- VRFBs are a type of rechargeable flow battery that uses vanadium ions in different oxidation states to store and release energy.
- VRFBs offer several advantages for home energy storage, including high efficiency, long cycle life, and the ability to decouple energy and power capacity.
- The vanadium electrolyte can be stored separately from the battery, allowing for scalable energy capacity by increasing the size of the electrolyte tanks.
- VRFBs are known for their high energy efficiency, making them a reliable and durable option for long-term energy storage.”
I’m all about energy sovereignty but storage still puzzles me.
As far as Stirling Engine production is concerned, there is a local Startup Accelerator that has industrial equipment available for use to make stuff. Would be interesting to see if a prototype could be made. I’m in Canada, but we can share info.

On another note, I noticed you started the Stirling thread. Researching that right now. Can’t quite get the concept of economically creating liquid air though. At first glance it seems very intensive from capital, energy and maintenance perspectives. Am I missing anything? Anyway, I’ll see you in that thread some time soon!
Also, not sure if you’re into MMA but your fellow South African Dricus Du Plessis won a heck of a UFC bout yesterday against one of the all-time greats, Robert Whittaker!
June 25, 2023 at 5:10 am in reply to: Brian’s backyard Sun Powered Parabolic mirror driven Stirling engine mastermind #16513Hey, just wanted to throw my hat in here.
I’m always thinking of ways to secure my family’s future. Solar and wind + lithium is too expensive since our hydro electricity is cheap and abundant in Manitoba but we get power outages every now and again. Plus what if something big happens and it’s -30C outside? Modern people don’t live very long in -30C with no power!!
I’m a construction contractor, unfortunately not a lot of experience in electrical. For sure a tinkerer and driven when motivated.
Have you folks made progress? Can I be of assistance?
I wonder if we could interest @brian to link some more resources?
@joshaughnessy, I checked out the OSV homepage and intro video. What a creative, fun, inspiring and productive endeavor!
Hey St Clair!
Is this “you”?
“Live Energy is a privately held energy broker and consulting firm that’s been helping businesses of all size lower electricity costs since deregulation began. Our Certified Energy Advisors will educate you about the market, explain your options, and serve as an unbiased resource you can trust. Our proprietary technology is unlike anything else in the market, and has revolutionized the way businesses control electricity costs by enabling smarter decisions in less time.”
Hey everyone!
My name is Karl, I’m from Canada, a floor and tile contractor by trade, supporting a family of 6. Interests are civil liberty, self-sovereignty, Bitcoin, agricultural and energy independence, and basketball (obviously!).
Heard Brian on the Jordan Peterson podcast and fell in love with the concept of private and personal AI as a way to combat the dystopian vision of big tech and big government AI.
Let’s go!
