    • Penny, or Nickel, for your Thoughts I was reading the Penny for Your Thoughts posting and had a few thoughts. Having been a coin collector since I was in elementary school I have to agree, yet disagree, with Brian on this one. First I agree is a good idea to save a few old pennies with the wheat stalks on the back.  They will probably be a good conversation piece if you give them to kids in the future.  First they will be about 100 years old.  And people will be amazed that we used to give metal tokens to each other as money.  Great for show and tell at school in 10 or 20 years. As far as collecting because they are worth something.  Well don't hold your breath.  Remember they are not worth anything unless you can get someone to buy them.   On the best of days you would get maybe 2/3 of the melt value of the coin. Its true as of today (23Feb2025) a pre-1982 penny contains about 3 grams of copper and at today's price is worth about 3 cents.  Sounds great, just go to the bank and get lots of rolls of pennies and start sorting through them.   You can make a pile of pre-1982 and post 1982 pennies.   The post 1982 pennies are 98% zinc and are only worth 0.7 cents.  And therein lies the rub.  If your trying to sell a few thousand pennies as copper ones, who will believe you?   I guess if someone has a counter and weighs them that would add a layer of confidence but who is going to do that for a few dollars? The solution is Nickels. The melt value of a nickel is already just under 6 cents and No One is collecting them.  I know because I have done it, that you can pretty much collect every Jefferson nickel in the series right now besides the really hard ones (1938-S, 1939-D and 1950-D).  As for the 35% silver wartime nickels you would be surprised how many you do find in rolls.  Melt value for those are about $1.75.  Whatever you can't find yourself you can pick up on ebay for a reasonable price. So if you want to collect something try nickels before they stop making them or change the metal content (75% copper 25% nickel). I say collecting is the way to go because its really hard to make a lot of money selling nickels for metal value.  2,000 nickels make $100.  At 5 grams per nickel that's 10KG or about 22 pounds. So enjoy collecting a type set of Jefferson nickels while you can for face value. One last note.  Though no one has been charged with defacing government property.  It is technically against the law to melt down US coin.I was reading the Penny for Your Thoughts posting and had a few thoughts. • X Account Suspension All, I am completely baffled as to why Brian's account on X would be suspended.  I have seen all of his posts over the years and have NEVER seen anything remotely offensive. If anyone has information it would be appreciated.  I have discussed this with Grok but gotten the usual word salad you would expect. This really brings up the subject that I think we as a community need alternate means of communication.  Be it a Rumble Channel or just a plan old email list.  We need some "decentralization". I hope this is just a good lesson for us all and nothing more. Power on Brian.  I for one an with you.   Just tell me what you need.
