I was talking to someone that was saying this exact same thing you’re saying. They’re worried about the general public’s perception of ChatGPT and what we call “AI” and how the people in power pulling the strings are going to manipulate it for their own ends by convincing people that the “AI” is actually intelligent and trustworthy so people will eventually listen to anything their AI says to them without researching further.
I told him that we (people interested in learning about the technology and utilizing it for good) are trying to go into it aware of all of this. We’ve been calling computer vision “AI”, for example. We’ve been calling all kinds of things AI for many years. You and my friend are talking about “AGI”, but he’s concerned the general population won’t know the difference.
